Revolt (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Bear McCreary.

‘Revolt (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)’ by none other than Bear McCreary. This is the chap who impressed me with his work for the ‘Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D’ soundtrack and the rather darker ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ soundtrack. For ‘Revolt’, we have 14 tracks providing 52 minutes of musical entertainment and only on download.

Track 1 is the aptly named track ‘Theme from Revolt’. It starts quietly enough and then gets rather load and strident before settling down again. This is almost techno rock and one of my favourite tracks from the album. I would guess that most of the instruments are synthesizers. It’s certainly does not sound like a classical orchestra.

Things get a little discordant with the second track ‘Cornered’, although it certainly gives you the impressions of something being chased and finally cornered. Again, it starts quiet before getting a little loud before closing with a quiet almost cornered ending. Quite a few of the tracks have quite fast tempos, so there might be a lot of running or chasing going on.

I’m thinking that the movie must involve quite a bit of rushing around. If not exactly running then a very quick walk is implied by the musical score. Track 6 ‘The Photographer’s Wish’ is perhaps the exception to the running and chasing. It does, on occasion, have very sudden build-ups which fade away to very haunting effects. While track 4 ‘Satellite Symbol’ also has these crescendos, the haunting effects aren’t there.

Films in general usually cover a range of events that provoke a range of human emotions. This is nearly always echoed in the films soundtrack which produces a musical score which has to vary in tempo and loudness. It also means that any rhythm or beat is usually constrained to no more than a few minutes at a time.

The ‘Revolt’ soundtrack has a wide range of musical scores and a few special sound effects thrown in. Like other works of Bear McCreary’s I have reviewed, it does get better and better with repeat listenings. You will start to anticipate the changes from slow to fast and from quiet to loud. I suppose the more effort you put in the more enjoyment you get out of it. This album is worth the effort.

While, in my review of the ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ soundtrack, I was wondering if McCreary soundtracks have large orchestral arrangements and might be regarded by some as the modern-day version of classical music. Things are turned on their head with this piece of work which I don’t think has a classical orchestra go anywhere near it. However, it is another masterful piece of work and well worth a listen and then another listen and then another.

I live in deepest darkest Essex where I enjoy photography, real ales, walking my dog, cooking and a really good book. I own an e-book reader which goes with me everywhere but still enjoy the traditional paper based varieties. My oriental studies have earned me a black belt in Suduko and I'm considered a master in deadly Bonsai (there are very few survivors).
