Hari Seldon’s psychohistory could forecast the fall of a Galactic Empire to within a decade, but it never saw the battle pass coming. Foundation: Galactic Frontier is FunPlus’s free-to-play strategy game set in the Apple TV version of Isaac Asimov’s saga, with in-app purchases, naturally. It has been running on phones for a year and is now going after PC players on Steam. A dedicated wishlist page points visitors to the Steam store listing.

The setup is cleverer than you might expect. You play a trader, picking your way between the crumbling Empire, the Foundation, rival factions and assorted rebels as Trantor loses its grip on the galaxy. That suits the source material well. In the original stories the Traders were the Foundation’s quiet weapon. They sold atomic gadgets to backward worlds until those worlds couldn’t do without them, and Hober Mallow won a war without firing a shot simply by cutting off the supply. The wishlist page promises encounters with Mallow, with Seldon himself and with the Mule, the one variable psychohistory couldn’t account for. Rather like your odds of pulling a legendary crew member.
The gameplay is a lot more explosive than Asimov, whose idea of an action sequence was usually two men arguing in an office. Your flagship is your home base. You crew it with recruited robots, bounty hunters and outlaws, then build a fleet, join alliances and fight large-scale real-time battles over planets and star systems. FunPlus lists the flagship’s amenities as including a charging station and fresh fruit, which already puts it a cut above most Imperial accommodation. Creators associated with Fallout, Stargate, Star Wars and Star Atlas had a hand in the ship designs. The score comes from Andreas Waldetoft, who has spent years making Stellaris sound suitably majestic.
FunPlus and Skydance announced the game in March 2024. The press material now credits FunPlus’s Chengdu studio working with Paramount Television Studios, which shows how quickly Hollywood’s ownership charts have been rewritten. It launched on iOS, Android and FunPlus’s own PC client in October 2025. To mark its first birthday it is running an ‘Astral Alignment’ event, with anniversary flagship skins, fireworks on the flagship display screen and a new crew member. A second season, ‘The Usurper Rebellion’, moves the action to a resource-rich star system lashed by magnetic storms, with new enemies and new guild content.
Purists may grumble. When Inverse looked at the game earlier this year, it found it fun and moreish, but more like a standard mobile MMORPG in Foundation livery than the slow-burn grand strategy the books suggest, and it wondered why nobody had made the Crusader Kings version instead. That’s a fair point. Then again, anyone who has sat through the Apple series’ more liberal departures from the text will know canon is a rather flexible commodity on Trantor these days.
Here at SFcrowsnest we have a soft spot for the Foundation books, Encyclopedia Galactica and all, so a free game that lets you play one of Mallow’s merchant princes is hardly a hanging offence. Just remember the lesson of the Traders: the cleverest way to conquer a galaxy is to sell it something it can’t stop using. FunPlus has clearly read the books.
