On Friday Percy Jackson and the Olympians packed up Camp Half-Blood and took it to Lucca Comics and Games in Italy, where Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri joined co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg and executive producer Dan Shotz for a panel and a reel of unseen season three footage. The footage isn’t online, so we can’t tell you what was in it, but the panel was reported to have promised the show’s “first real bad guy”. Lucca is a fine place to unveil a story about monsters, since the town’s streets are already full of people in elaborate costumes who might attack at any moment.

The bad guy is Atlas, played by Holt McCallany, and the season adapts The Titan’s Curse, the third of Rick Riordan’s novels and the first time it has been put on screen. Annabeth has vanished, Percy and Grover set out to find her, and the goddess Artemis is in trouble too. The teaser has already shown Percy holding up the sky, which is a hard thing to do while remaining teenage and sarcastic.

The cast list has swollen along with the budget for divine casting. Dafne Keen is Artemis, Kate McKinnon is Aphrodite, Ming-Na Wen is Hera and Andra Day is Athena, with Hubert Smielecki as Apollo, Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie as Nico and Bianca di Angelo, and Saara Chaudry as Zoë Nightshade. Scobell has said this is the show’s most book-accurate season yet, which for the books’ long-suffering fans is the greatest prophecy of all.

Season three arrives on Disney+ on 20 November, eight episodes released weekly. Season two only landed last December, so Disney has moved at a speed the gods themselves would find unseemly. Here at SFcrowsnest magazine we’ll note that the Olympians have a long tradition of showing up on time and then making everybody’s life worse.
