The X-Men casting rumours are now arriving at roughly the rate of Sentinels in a Days of Future Past montage. The latest, relayed by Gizmodo’s Morning Spoilers on Monday from an online insider via Comic Book, has Alien: Romulus and Civil War star Cailee Spaeny “in talks to play Kitty Pryde in the MCU”, reportedly after missing out on the role of Rogue. Let’s be clear about the status of this one: it is a rumour from an anonymous social-media source. No trade has confirmed it, and Marvel Studios has said nothing at all.
It does at least make sense on paper. Kitty Pryde, the teenage computer whizz who can walk through walls, was introduced by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in Uncanny X-Men #129 in 1980 and quickly became the reader’s way into the team: the new kid at the school, who was terrified of Nightcrawler and adopted a small purple dragon called Lockheed. She was the heart of Days of Future Past in the comics, and Elliot Page played her in Fox’s films. Spaeny, who has spent the past few years being chased by Xenomorphs and photographing a collapsing America, would bring rather more grit to the part than its early-1980s roots might suggest.
It joins a growing pile of reported casting for the film. Earlier this week we covered the equally unconfirmed claim that Peter Claffey, Dunk in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is Marvel’s new Beast, with filming said to start in the UK in 2027. None of these names will mean much until Marvel stops phasing through the question and announces a cast. When it does, we’ll be checking the list for a small purple dragon.
