Good news for anyone who has spent the last two and a half years wondering how Senshi would season a chimera: Delicious in Dungeon season two has served up fresh character visuals. The less good news is that you’ll be waiting until October 2027 to eat. Kadokawa and Studio Trigger have unveiled new artwork of four characters, Falin, Kabru, Mithrun and Thistle, along with a matching set of miniature illustrations, ahead of the season’s premiere in Japan and its global streaming run, exclusively on Netflix.

Mild spoilers for season one follow. The choice of faces tells you where the story is heading. Falin, the sister Laios and company have been trying to rescue since a red dragon swallowed her in the very first episode, is now firmly part of the menu problem rather than its solution. Thistle, the Lunatic Magician pulling her strings, is the dungeon’s lord and the closest thing the series has to a final boss. Kabru, the rival adventurer who finds Laios’s enthusiasm for monster ecology faintly alarming, and Mithrun, the eerily detached elf captain of the Canaries, bring the politics of the surface world crashing down into the lower floors.

The date itself isn’t new. October 2027 was announced at Anime Expo back in July, alongside an “ultra teaser visual” of a chimera-fied Falin under Thistle’s control and the party pressing ever deeper underground. The returning crew is the one that made season one such a treat: Yoshihiro Miyajima directs at Trigger, Kimiko Ueno handles series composition, Naoki Takeda returns as character designer, and Yasunori Mitsuda, whose Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade scores have soundtracked a great many sleepless nights, writes the music.

Ryoko Kui’s manga ran in Harta from 2014 to 2023, and its particular genius was to take the grubby logistics of the old-school dungeon crawl seriously. Anyone who grew up with a Fighting Fantasy gamebook in one hand and a pencil in the other, ticking off Provisions and wondering what adventurers actually ate between rooms full of orcs, recognised both the joke and the love behind it. The first season’s 24 episodes arrived on Netflix in January 2024, and we covered its trailer before the first slime had hit the pan. The long gap since has been, depending on your temperament, either an agony or an excellent opportunity to read ahead.

Three and a half years between seasons is a long wait even by anime standards. Then again, as Senshi would be the first to point out, the best stews are never rushed.
