Square Enix has finally put a date on Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, and it is not the one it promised. Producer and director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida used the opening keynote of the Tokyo Fan Festival to announce a full launch on 23 February 2027, with early access from 19 February for anyone who pre-orders. Pre-orders open on 4 November. That shoves the expansion about four weeks past its January window, and reports say Yoshida apologised with a bow and promised no further delays, which is the correct Japanese way of saying sorry and the English way of saying “we mean it this time”.

The consolation prize was the final trailer and the second new job. Zephyr is a physical ranged DPS who fights with a crossbow and an avian familiar called a Nephele, with a mobile, evasive style and roots in Ilsabard. It joins the previously revealed Bastion tank, which hides behind a pair of large shields, so the expansion’s job list now covers “stand there” and “fire from a distance while a bird helps”, the two most dependable strategies in medieval warfare. The level cap rises from 100 to 110, and the story kicks off the Godless Realms Saga in a frozen realm called the Fourth.

Evercold is heading for PC, Mac, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. Pre-order bonuses include a Wind-Up Köttr minion and an experience-boosting earring, because no MMORPG has ever been dated without a small mascot attached. A month is no great hardship for a game that has been running since 2013 and has taught its players patience the hard way. Here at SFcrowsnest magazine we’d simply suggest stocking up on warm clothes. It’s called Evercold, after all, and it’s now arriving in the right month for it.
