Most video games settle for one god. Honkai: Star Rail has a whole pantheon of them, the Aeons, each embodying a cosmic idea and each with the bedside manner of a black hole. HoYoverse has just released the third chapter of its occasional theology lecture, “Myriad Celestia Trailer: Fables About the Stars Part 3”, and it opens with the line “The horn to hunt the Voracity has sounded!”, which is as good a way as any to start a Thursday.

According to HoYoverse’s description, after a long Amber Era the gods gather again and stage a farce that starts a new climax in the war of the Aeons, “a fissure has opened in the apocalypse”, and a gaze from the future “brings a dead god back from hell”. The trailer ends by noting that “the Elation requires laughter”, which is the cue for Aha, the Aeon of Elation and the cosmos’s most dangerous practical joker, voiced in English by Amber Lee Connors.

The fans have been busy with the freeze-frame button. Players report that it offers the first proper look at three Aeons who have so far stayed off-camera: Idrila, Aeon of Beauty, who vanished and may have been shattered into mirrors; Long, the dead dragon of Permanence whose descendants include the Vidyadhara of the Xianzhou; and Terminus, Aeon of Finality, who is said to live in the past and move backwards towards the birth of the universe, and who has so far appeared mainly as a set of suspicious black cats. HoYoverse’s own text names only Aha and the Voracity, so treat the identification as the fandom’s verdict rather than gospel, though “a dead god back from hell” and a “gaze from the future” do fit rather neatly. Idrila also had a brief cameo in the first Fables trailer back in 2023.

The timing isn’t a coincidence. Version 4.7, “Now Lay Laughter to All Stars”, makes Aha the game’s first playable Aeon, through a five-star Quantum character called Nihilux. The Special Program livestream is on Friday 30th October at 12:30 UK time, when HoYoverse is expected to confirm the update’s launch date.

Playing as a god is a big promotion for a game that started out with you as an amnesiac with a baseball bat on a space station. Then again, if any Aeon was ever going to agree to be put in a gacha banner, it was always going to be the one who thinks the whole universe is a joke.
