Ninjago has been running since 2011, which in toy-franchise years makes it roughly as old as the TARDIS. So LEGO has reached for the answer Hollywood keeps reaching for when its heroes have been saving the same city for fifteen years: skip ahead and hand the job to the next lot. The first teaser for LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Embers + Ashes is out, and it looks gorgeous.

Embers + Ashes is the third Legends project, after Monstrosity and Duskfall, and is due to premiere in March 2027 as a direct sequel to Duskfall, which had already jumped the story forward in time. The heroes are a new generation of elemental ninja, Nate, Mira, Jin and Tre, trained by Master Ivo and up against the Oni Imperator and his Oni Warriors. It’s pitched at older children, roughly eight to twelve, and the teaser’s 2D anime styling, all fire-lit city streets and drifting sparks, is darker and more cinematic than the main series. Writer Glen Lakin, a LEGO animation veteran, is reported to be involved.

One familiar face survives the generational handover. Master Zane is back, which makes perfect sense, because Zane is a Nindroid, and robots are spared the indignities of the time skip. The others have presumably taken up allotments and started complaining about their knees, while Zane needs nothing more than the odd oil change and a firmware update. Mentoring suits him. He was always the one who read the instructions.

The Oni, meanwhile, have been Ninjago’s primordial big bads since March of the Oni in 2017, and their masks drove the Sons of Garmadon season the following year, so an Imperator at the top of the pyramid is a logical promotion. Every villainous dynasty eventually wants a grander job title.

This being LEGO, there’s a set before there’s a show. 71888 Ivo’s Ninja Dojo goes on sale on 1 January 2027 at £249.99: a 3,495-piece, 14+ build with sliding doors, detachable levels, booby traps and a hoverbike, plus 12 minifigures including the new team, Master Ivo, Master Zane and the Oni Imperator. You’ll be able to own the dojo a couple of months before you’ve seen anyone fight in it, which is the LEGO equivalent of reading the last page first.

The earlier Legends instalments premiered on LEGO’s YouTube channel; LEGO hasn’t yet said where Embers + Ashes will turn up. The teaser’s tagline promises that legends never die. In LEGO’s case, they just get re-released in a different colour scheme.
