Teaser visual for the Mashle live-action film, showing Mash Burnedead from behind holding a dumbbell

Hajime Kōmoto’s Mashle: Magic and Muscles is getting a live-action film, which opens in Japanese cinemas on 19 March 2027. Warner Bros. and Fuji TV are overseeing it. CREDEUS, the company behind the live-action Kingdom films, Sakamoto Days and the record-breaking Kokuho, is producing, and Toho will distribute in Japan. The cast hasn’t been named yet, but the actor playing Mash will be revealed on 5 November, so the wait for the first photo of a man in a wizard’s robe holding a dumbbell is nearly over.

That’s more or less what the teaser visual shows. Mash Burnedead stands with his back to us in his academy robes, a dumbbell where his wand ought to be, under the tagline “It’s finally time for a movie adaptation, Mash.” By the standards of a story in which the hero answers most magical attacks by punching them, it’s positively restrained.

Here’s the premise for the uninitiated. In a world where magic decides your social standing, Mash has none whatsoever. Instead he has trained himself into a slab of muscle, and when his secret gets out he’s packed off to Easton Magic Academy. There he must become a Divine Visionary, the school’s elite, purely by punching through every spell thrown at him. He also really likes cream puffs. It’s a Harry Potter parody played completely straight by its lead, which is exactly why it works.

That’s what makes Warner Bros.’ involvement so enjoyable. The studio that turned one boy-wizard boarding school into a theme park empire is now backing a film about a boy at a wizard school who thinks spells are optional. Somebody in Burbank either has a fine sense of humour or hasn’t read the manga yet.

Rumours about a film began in September 2025, when a Japanese weekly claimed that Mackenyu, Zoro in Netflix’s One Piece, would star, with Yuichi Fukuda directing. None of that has been confirmed, and tomorrow’s announcement will settle at least the first part. Meanwhile, the anime returns for a third season in January 2027, so Mash gets two outings in three months. There’s no word yet on a release outside Japan for the film. UK fans will have to make do with the anime and with Anime Limited’s collector’s edition of season one, due on Blu-ray next year.

Live-action manga adaptations have a patchy record, and the ones that work tend to lean into the silliness rather than apologise for it. Mashle has no other setting. If the casting department has found someone who can deliver a deadpan stare while bench-pressing a magic school, this could be a lot of fun.
