The Ghostbusters had proton packs and a containment unit. Neoshoco’s Phantom Busters has a lead who simply eats the ghosts, which is arguably the most efficient approach to the paranormal waste problem yet devised. The manga is getting its TV anime in 2027, as announced in September, and today it picked up a studio, a director, two character designers and a cast.

TOHO animation STUDIO is producing. Chika Nagaoka, whose credits include Tamon’s B-Side and the Detective Conan film The Million-dollar Pentagram, is directing, with character designs by Takahiro Kishida (Haikyu!!, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) and Rina Iwamoto, a main animator on Fate/EXTRA Last Encore. Nobuhiko Okamoto voices Mogari Shishikuno, Natsuki Hanae is Eugene Korekishi, Koki Uchiyama is Kaoru Kanzaki and Ryota Suzuki is Kotaro Tamon. A teaser visual came out with the announcement.

The set-up is a good one. Eugene is a straight-A student who does not believe in ghosts. Mogari is an exorcist from a family of exorcists who destroys spirits by swallowing them whole, despite being unable to see them. Then they meet Kaoru, who can see spirits, and Kotaro, who can hear them and would rather send them off politely than gobble them, and the four of them found a school club for the purpose, which is how most of the best supernatural comedies begin. The story is set in Kamakura, a town with no shortage of temples and, evidently, restless residents.

The manga has run in Shueisha’s Jump Square since August 2023 and has passed 1.4 million copies in circulation, digital editions included. Viz has published it in English since October 2025, and it ranked fourth in AnimeJapan’s 2025 poll of manga fans most wanted to see animated, which means the production committee had been given a fair amount of notice.

It is a promising line-up for a comedy that lives or dies on timing and facial expressions, and Kishida’s credits suggest a series with a lot of movement in it. No broadcast date, platform or episode count has been announced yet. Until then the main unanswered question is a practical one: the Ghostbusters needed a containment unit, whereas Mogari needs only a napkin.
