Matthew Mercer has run tables for voice actors, celebrities and an animated series on Prime Video, and he’s now adding VTubers to the list. Critical Role and hololive production have announced Shattered Legends, a six-part Daggerheart actual-play miniseries premiering in mid-November and, crucially for the lore obsessives, canon to Critical Role’s world of Exandria.

It’s the first collaboration between the Los Angeles storytelling outfit and the Japanese VTuber agency run by COVER Corporation. Mercer is game master, with fellow Critical Role co-founder Marisha Ray at the table alongside four hololive English talents: Nerissa Ravencroft, Mori Calliope, Shiori Novella and Gigi Murin. The character art is now out, giving us a party of Ray’s Florence, Ravencroft’s Siliun ‘Sil’ Faell, Calliope’s Kaz Oogod, Novella’s Marchen ‘March’ Rosemyne and Murin’s Giryn. No ancestries or classes have been officially confirmed, which leaves the internet roughly a month to argue about them.

The teaser has Mercer apparently opening a fresh episode of Critical Role, only to find himself whisked into an unknown world and face to face with Nerissa Ravencroft. He also paid a visit to COVER’s Tokyo headquarters in the run-up to the announcement, which suggests the company sees this as more than a one-off novelty. A promotional tour is planned across North America, Europe and Asia, and the whole thing is sponsored by card-sleeve maker Ultra PRO, presumably to keep everyone’s Daggerheart cards in mint condition.

Episodes will go out on the Critical Role, hololive English and Nerissa Ravencroft YouTube channels with Japanese subtitles, and on Critical Role’s own streaming platform, Beacon. Beacon subscribers also get a Session Zero, with Mercer walking the players through building their characters, plus post-episode Cooldown chats, and some of that bonus material will be available through Ravencroft’s YouTube channel memberships too.

The game is Daggerheart, the fantasy RPG from Critical Role’s publishing arm Darrington Press, which swapped Dungeons & Dragons’ twenty-sided tyranny for a pair of twelve-sided Hope and Fear dice when it launched in 2025. That’s a sensible fit. Actual play lives or dies on the narrative swing of a roll, and a system built around players and GM trading momentum ought to suit performers who are, by trade, very good at reacting to things.

Here at SFcrowsnest, we remember when watching other people play role-playing games meant standing behind somebody’s chair at a convention, trying to see the battle map past a Games Workshop carrier bag. Now it’s a cross-continental streaming event with digital avatars, subtitles and canonical consequences. Whether Exandria’s lore keepers are ready for whatever four VTubers do to the timeline is another matter, but Mercer survived the Mighty Nein. A little more chaos in Exandria is practically tradition.
