Comic Book Creator # 41 December 2026 (magazine review)

Now, here’s a change. An edition of ‘Comic Book Creator’ that has a lot of articles but nothing their product I’ve actually seen so hard to raise comment on, although read with interest. This issue has also sold out in most outlets, I pulled this one from Walt’s Comics in the UK, although you can still buy from TwoMorrows direct. What I will do this time is fill in some information from publisher John Morrow himself about why there is smaller print runs. When the distributor Black Diamond went bankrupt 18 or so months back, stock from many publishers were not only lost but no refunds or distribution. Some companies lost millions. Twomorrows was lucky not to lose that much but was still burnt. As such they had to revise their print runs and now have a new distributor. It just means fewer copies for the moment. Hunt and you might be lucky. This issue of ‘Comic Book Creator’ had a low print run.

So, one of the bigger pieces is an interview with Geoff Johns by Matt Meante as the creator has branched out into his creator owned company and love of writing long runs of comicbooks. What is interesting is his take on the various ages of comicbook periods. We’re currently in the Bronze Age, although I think really it’s more a case of running out of metals and moving into alloys. Certainly, there’s a widespread for comicbook tastes these days, just a problem of finding enough readers for their print runs.

The biggest section is an interview with comicbook writer Len Wein (1948-2017) in 1994 for the American New York radio channel WBAI’s ‘Nuff Said’ done by phone in the early hours with Ken Gale. It isn’t noted what time it was for Wein over in California. I can’t compare much to other American radio channels, although have read the read they did with Steve Gerber and transcribed in ‘Comic Book Creator’ as well. They are refreshingly knowledgeable and articulate and makes for a fun read and notes the music tracks, with touches of comicbook reference, they periodically put in for a break. They go over his career in detail. It’s also a good reminder why he didn’t last long as editor-in-chief at Marvel as he was in charge of 54 comicbooks. After his departure, the lesson was learnt was to divide into 4-5 comics with their own editors and sub-editors so the chief supervised. I hope there’s some consideration for an article in the future going over what the various jobs at different time periods actually covered. I meant, its not only selecting the creative teams but making such the work got in in time for each person to get their own jobs done. When you multiple this by number of issues being done at any one time and the stages they are at, it really is a lot of work that the reader doesn’t really see.

Just because I haven’t gone into the other smaller pieces doesn’t mean I didn’t find them interesting, they were, just nothing I could offer on them.
