Kadokawa has confirmed that Date A Live F Last Date, the final chapter of the long-running anime, is a theatrical film rather than a TV season, and that it opens in Japanese cinemas on Friday 26 March 2027. The news broke on Sunday at the Fantasia Bunko Grand Thanksgiving Festival 2026 Online, together with a teaser trailer and a second teaser visual, and the official line is that this is the concluding arc of the whole animated saga.

For anyone who has managed to avoid it since 2013, Date A Live has one of the more gloriously daft premises in SF. Spirits, girls of terrifying power from somewhere else entirely, keep arriving on Earth and setting off devastating spatial quakes. The military would quite like to shoot them. Shido Itsuka, an ordinary schoolboy with an unusual gift, has another idea: take each one on a date, make her fall for him, and seal her powers away with a kiss. It is, in essence, nuclear deterrence as reimagined by a sixteen-year-old, and it has sold more than six million books.

Koushi Tachibana’s light novels, illustrated by Tsunako, ran to 22 volumes between 2011 and 2020, and the anime has followed them across five TV seasons, a 2015 film and the Date A Bullet spin-off, changing studios almost as often as Shido changes dinner reservations. AIC PLUS+, Production IMS, J.C.Staff and Geek Toys have all had a go. The finale goes to Fugaku, with Junji Nishimura directing, while Fumihiko Shimo returns on script and Naoto Nakamura on character designs, both carried over from seasons four and five. Nobunaga Shimazaki is back as Shido and Marina Inoue as Tohka Yatogami, and the full roster of spirits returns with them, including Asami Sanada’s Kurumi Tokisaki, the time-devouring gothic assassin who remains the franchise’s breakout star by a distance.

The project was first unveiled on 10 April, the day fans call Tohka Day because it’s the date on which the very first novel begins, with a teaser visual of Tohka in a wedding dress. Subtle, it isn’t. The Japanese tagline invites us to begin “our final war”, the series’ long-standing pun in which every war is really a date, and Tsunako has designed special new outfits for all twelve spirits. Tachibana marked the occasion by working out that a baby born when the first volume came out would now be finishing middle school, and then abandoning that line of arithmetic as too painful to pursue. Anyone who bought the first paperback in 2011 will sympathise.

No international release has been announced. Crunchyroll streamed Date A Live V with an English dub, which makes it the obvious candidate, but until somebody says so, British fans are left in the classic position of any Date A Live hero: waiting nervously by the phone for an answer.
