Harry Potter series arrives from HBO over Christmas 2026 (trailer).
Well, it was only a matter of time. In a move that will surprise absolutely nobody who has glanced at a streaming balance sheet in the last five years, HBO has officially unveiled the first teaser for its shiny new Harry Potter television series, with a Christmas 2026 debut pencilled in like a particularly lucrative prophecy.
Yes, we are going back to Hogwarts. Again. But this time with eight episodes, a fresh cast, and the sort of long-form storytelling that suggests someone at HBO looked at the books and thought, “What if we actually… included all of it?”
The first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which means we’re rewinding right back to the cupboard under the stairs, the suspiciously aggressive letters, and that moment when a giant man turns up to explain that your entire life has been a clerical error.
The teaser itself, unveiled at the HBO Max UK & Ireland launch event, leans heavily into atmosphere. Moody corridors, flickering candles, and that unmistakable sense that a great many children are about to be placed in mild but persistent danger for educational purposes. In other words, business as usual at Hogwarts.
Casting-wise, HBO has opted for a mix of fresh faces and seasoned scene-stealers. Dominic McLaughlin steps into the round spectacles as Harry, with Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout joining him as Hermione and Ron. Around them swirls a rather formidable supporting cast, including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Snape, which should give the staff room a pleasantly intimidating edge.
Nick Frost as Hagrid feels like the sort of inspired casting decision that makes you wonder why it hasn’t already happened in three alternate timelines. Meanwhile, the corridors of Hogwarts will be positively teeming with Weasleys, Malfoys, and assorted future trauma recipients, all ready to relive the greatest hits of wizarding education.

Behind the scenes, HBO has assembled a team that suggests they are taking this rather seriously. Francesca Gardiner is steering the writing, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes, and the original books once again serving as the blueprint. The promise, at least, is a more faithful, more detailed take on the story than the films could manage, which is either a dream come true or a very expensive way of discovering just how much Quidditch detail the average viewer can tolerate.
There is, of course, the small matter of legacy. The original films loom large, like a particularly well-funded ghost, and any new version has to contend with the fact that entire generations have already decided what Hogwarts looks like, sounds like, and smells like (probably candle wax and mild peril). Recasting such iconic roles is always a risky business, but it’s also the only way forward if you’re determined to keep the magic alive and, more importantly, monetised.
Still, the long-form format does offer genuine potential. More room for character, more time for world-building, and perhaps a chance to explore corners of the wizarding world that previously got trimmed for time. If nothing else, we may finally get a Defence Against the Dark Arts curriculum that makes even a passing amount of sense.
The series is set to debut on HBO at Christmas 2026, before landing globally on HBO Max, including here in the UK. Which means that in just under a year’s time, families everywhere will once again gather around the screen to watch a young wizard discover his destiny, attend a slightly alarming boarding school, and repeatedly risk his life while the adults look on with what can only be described as professional detachment.
Here at SFcrowsnest, we’ll admit to a certain cautious curiosity. Reboots are ten-a-Knut these days, but occasionally one lands that justifies its existence. Whether this new Harry Potter manages that trick or simply reminds everyone how much they liked the original remains to be seen.
Either way, Hogwarts is reopening its doors. Again. Do try not to get eaten by anything in the Forbidden Forest on your way in.
