The Boys Season 5 (TV series review)

The last season of ‘The Boys’ and released on blu-ray this year. Great thing, there are nine extras this time.

If you read my recent review of Season 4, then you know the situation between Vought and the Boys. The 7, Vought’s supes team is diminishing in numbers as they kill each other off. There is also a matter of locating some samples of the Vought serum for the first generation as it grants long-life. With Homelander (actor Antony Starr) discovering he is going grey and aging, he wants the serum. The Boys see it as a means to make an antidote. Added to this Homelander gets a revelation and thinks he is God and gets Oh-Father (actor Daveed Diggs) to prepare people for the new Democratic Church Of America now he’s had the old serum. Anyone in the congregation not totally believing in him will be killed and he’s got psychic psychotics doing the check. Did I say Homelander is off his trolley? He did kill his own choice of new President and duff up his own son amongst others, like killing the people who brought him up. His laundry bill must be enormous or he has a wardrobe full of his supes suits.

Practically everything is spoiler. There is a little unseen jump between episodes but quickly fills itself in. This is a dangerous world but likely to get a rewatch once in a while.

The extras are 20 minute podcasts with cast and production from 2020 and for season 2. Seeing Antony Starr as he really is and he describes looking like Clark Kent is definitely tongue-in-cheek. The other eight extras run also run at 20 minutes each, presented by Alsha Tyler on Prime Rewind. In some respect, this should have been with season 2 on blu-ray but extras are extras. Considering the deadliness of the series, the downtimes for the cast seems to be spent fooling around to balance things out.

The big question now is when should I read ‘The Boys’ in their collected volumes? It’s hinted that there are some differences but that happens with any adaptation. Even so, it will be interesting to test this.
