Warriors Of The Boundless by Mike Chinn (book review)

Here we have great swords and sorcery adventures. Author Mike Chinn defines the ‘Warriors Of The Boundless’ as ‘Endless realms stacked and clustered… populated by gods and monsters, creatures of evil masquerading as good and vice versa’ or it may just be a load of fables. With his staggeringly clever invention, Chinn has brought the Boundless to life. He introduces several of the warriors, most fighting with swords and magic and, occasionally, with flintlock guns from two hundred years ago. They traverse a series of very odd realms, with unpronounceable names. We meet some very strange creatures, including the many-shaped, who reappear. Citadels and whole kingdoms are magically destroyed, crumbling to dust. All the characters are killed but will any of them stay dead? There is a great deal of sword-fighting and some wonderful magical effects.

This book consists of six linked stories, not quite a novel. Four of the stories have previously appeared in anthologies. There is also a fine introduction, all about swords and sorcery by Adrian Cole and some magnificent and very appropriate black and white drawings by comic artist Enrique Alcatena. The beauty of this setting is that the Boundless is more than large enough for many more tales to be told. I found this book a magical read, full of action and amazing description.
