Doctor Who The Companion Chronicle: Mastermind by Jonathan Morris (CD review).

In ‘Mastermind’, we welcome the return of the two soldiers in charge of the UNIT vaults, from the previous ‘Companion Chronicle: Tales From The Vault’. Captain Ruth Matheson (Daphne Ashbrook) has something to show Charlie Sato (Yee Yee Tso) when the clock strikes midnight. The Vault has a very special guest and he wants to tell his story. As they take it in ten minute turns to avoid falling under his influence, the pair discover how the ghastly corpse-like creature has managed to exist on Earth in the twentieth century and in hiding for so long.

This is a twisted tale by the mastermind himself, Jonathon Morris. This ‘Companion Chronicle’ is a sneaky one and it really gets under your skin. Geoffrey Beevers who played the Master in ‘The Keeper Of Traken’ in the is on good form here. His elaborate story of bodily possession and manipulation in the heady days of Prohibition in America amongst others is great fun with plenty of cultural references including ‘The Godfather’. Morris takes great pleasure in playing with these characters and you get a sense that he cares about this monster having a sneaking regard for the psychopath that is the Master, as we all do. Without the Master, the Doctor might appear to be a toffee-nosed know-it-all but with the arrogance of the renegade Time Lord highlighted, it shows us the compassionate nature of our own Galleyfreyan protector.

All in all, this is an interesting hour and I’m going to miss these ‘Companion Chronicles’ as they draw to a close but I’m sure that Big Finish will continue to pull out many a rabbit from the TARDIS for our amusement.
