Pushing towards Proxima Centauri (science video).
Proxima Centauri, our nearest solar neighbour, is just four light years distant.
The recent finding of Proxima D, a new exoplanet, has reignited debate about whether the proxima system is our greatest bet for reaching another Earth.
How did we come upon Proxima D? How can we know what the circumstances are like on other planets? To discover more, watch the fab science video, above.
Proxima Centauri, our nearest solar neighbor, is just four light years away, which sounds pretty close when you think about it! Itโs like a brief road trip to the next town over… if you could drive at the speed of light, that is. But even though itโs โcloseโ in cosmic terms, itโs still an incredible distance, and reaching Proxima Centauri would require technology that we donโt currently possess.
But recent news of the discovery of Proxima D, a new exoplanet in the Proxima Centauri system, has reignited debate about whether this system is our best bet for finding another Earth. After all, if we canโt make the trip ourselves, we might as well hope that thereโs a nice, hospitable planet waiting for us when we figure out how to get there.
Some scientists have theorized that Proxima D could be a โsuper-Earthโ similar to our own, with a rocky surface and the potential for liquid water. Others, however, have pointed out that itโs likely too close to Proxima Centauri to be in the โhabitable zoneโ where conditions would be right for life as we know it.
But letโs not get too discouraged. After all, if thereโs one thing science fiction has taught us, itโs that thereโs always the possibility of unexpected surprises with alien planets. Maybe Proxima D is home to a race of giant, intelligent squids who have built underwater cities and are just waiting for us to arrive. Or perhaps itโs a planet of immortal, super-strong vampires who are looking for fresh blood (in the form of human explorers).
Proxima Centauri system has been featured in several works of science fiction. Here are a few examples:
โProximaโ is a science fiction novel by author Stephen Baxter, published in 2018. The novel is set in the future and follows the journey of a group of human colonists as they embark on a one-way trip to the planet Proxima Centauri b, the first exoplanet that was confirmed to be in the habitable zone around its star.
โAbaddonโs Gateโ is a science fiction novel by James S.A. Corey published in 2013. The third book of the Expanse series takes place in the future and deals with humanityโs first interstellar colony ship, the โRocinanteโ, which journeys to the Proxima Centauri system and meets with a mysterious alien construct called โthe Ringโ.
โStar Trekโ is a long-running science fiction franchise, in a few episodes and movies, there are references to Proxima Centauri. This star system is mentioned as a point of reference, as itโs the nearest to Earth.
In the game โElite Dangerousโ, Proxima Centauri is a star system that players can explore and land on the planets. The game also includes the possibility of finding alien structures, as well as trading and other activities.
In reality, the discovery of Proxima D and the potential of finding other exoplanets that may be hospitable to life is an exciting step forward in our understanding of the universe and our place in it. And while we may not yet have the technology to reach Proxima Centauri, that doesnโt mean we shouldnโt start planning our trip and packing our bags, just in case the cotton candy planet is real.
Itโs certainly an interesting subject to think about and speculate, even if the chances of the above scenarios occurring are close to none. Itโs always fun to let our imagination fly when it comes to the vast unknown that is the universe.
