Toei Animation has announced Dual Shadow ~Precure Villain Heroines~, a TV spin-off arriving in 2027 from the magical-girl franchise that has been settling matters with friendship and sparkles since Futari wa Precure in 2004. The teaser above is hardly in the franchise’s usual key. It opens on a field of flowers in warm light, narrows to a single bloom under a spotlight, adds a pair of watchful eyes lurking behind it, and then captions the whole business with the words “After all, we’re not Precure.”

That is the pitch. The keyword is “villain”, and unlike most of the franchise’s earlier spin-offs, this one comes with an original story and an all-new cast rather than borrowing the existing heroines. Cast, staff, studio, broadcaster and start date are all still to come. The current main series, Star Detective Precure!, the franchise’s 23rd, began on 1 February and is still running, so Toei is evidently happy to commission a dark twin while the lights are on upstairs.

Precure has form here. Villains turning good has been part of the furniture since at least Fresh Precure! in 2009, when the antagonist Eas became Cure Passion, and the franchise has always shown a quiet conviction that anyone can be redeemed given a transformation sequence and a mascot. Dual Shadow turns the arrangement round and hands the villains the lead. It is Paradise Lost for the toy aisle, minus the blank verse, and Hammer worked out in 1958 that the villain is the part people queue for.

What makes the teaser interesting is how little of it seems meant for the youngest viewers. Japanese coverage described its mood as the opposite of previous Precure releases, which is quite something for a franchise that usually turns up at breakfast time on a Sunday.

We shall know more when somebody announces a cast, and presumably a villain song. Until then, somewhere a mascot is nervously checking the exits.
