Motorist with Bond-like gadget car jailed for activating smoke screen.

Come in, Mr. Chaplin, we’ve been expecting you, and your heavily modded Peugeot 309.

Sixty-nine-year-old Simon Chaplin may now be regretting the array of James Bond-Q-like spy gadgets he fitted to his vehicle, not least the illegal custom number plate (non-revolving) which led to the police trying to pull him over – and Simon then trying to lose the police during a chase by activating his hidden smoke screen.

The smoke generator was a custom oil feed squirting onto the exhaust, activated from a secret panel in the dashboard. Unfortunately, the device was more Johnny English than James Bond, as the police were able to follow the smoke trail of the car from the next country over, the smoke trail leading them right back to the farm in Mid-Wales when Simon Chaplin lives.

Simon was convicted on causing a danger to motorists by Swansea Crown Court, who then cleared him of possessing an imitation pistol in a public place – after all, even Johnny English needs something to threaten the evil geniuses with on their secret volcanic island bases.
