“Bigby will remember that.” Few phrases in gaming have carried so much menace while often meaning so little. Telltale’s little white notification told you that your choices mattered, and then, as often as not, walked you down the same corridor as everyone else. It was a magnificent bluff and we loved it anyway. Next Thursday, 29 October, Fabletown reopens for business with The Wolf Among Us Remastered, and the old bluff gets a new coat of paint.
The remaster arrives digitally on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox. According to Telltale, the Xbox version is technically an Xbox One release that plays on Series X|S through backward compatibility, which is a faintly odd thing to read in 2026, but there we are. Physical editions follow in the first quarter of 2027. If you can’t wait that long, there is a free demo available now as part of Steam Next Fest.
The headline addition is Noir Mode, which drains the game into black and white and can be flicked on or off at any moment. Given that the original already looked like a pulp paperback cover left out in a neon rainstorm, it’s a natural fit. Think Sin City, with more fairy-tale characters smoking in doorways. Elsewhere there are more detailed character models, busier environments, remastered audio, better accessibility and higher resolutions, plus over an hour of extras: cast interviews, behind-the-scenes videos, galleries and five playable deleted scenes. Game director Matt Saia has said the team treated the story, the directing choices and the art style as untouchable, which is the correct attitude to take towards a decade-old favourite.
For the uninitiated, the game is a prequel to Bill Willingham’s Fables comics, the Vertigo series in which nursery-rhyme exiles live in secret in 1980s Manhattan. You play Bigby Wolf, the reformed Big Bad Wolf turned Fabletown’s sheriff, investigating a murder across five episodes with titles like Faith, A Crooked Mile and Cry Wolf. Willingham famously declared Fables to be in the public domain in 2023, a move DC rejected. This remaster, though, is produced with Warner Bros. and DC’s Vertigo, so it’s very much the licensed article. No glamour required.
Then there is the sequel, which has had a fairy tale of its own, mostly the kind where the princess sleeps for a very long time. A second season was in the works when Telltale collapsed in 2018. The revived company re-announced it at The Game Awards in 2019, then went quiet. There were layoffs in 2023 and denials of cancellation in 2024. Now The Wolf Among Us 2 is officially slated for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Anyone who played the first episode in October 2013 aged eighteen is now old enough to own a mortgage and a bad back, and to need a stiff one in the Trip Trap bar.
The remaster is a sensible way to get everybody back up to speed before Bigby finally gets his second case. Whether 2027 actually holds is another matter. Telltale has said so, and we have made a note. We will remember that.
