Working rail-gun rifle produced with a 3-d printer.

Do you want a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range? Well, if you’ve got a 3-d printer and want to follow David Wirth’s example, you could print out a 1800 joule rail-gun that fires aluminium and graphite ammo at around 560 mph.

Looks big? Well, the rail-gun needs six capacitors to power it, so maybe all those video games with people running around with super-sized weaponry isn’t that far from the truth?
