The Marvels: navigating the quantum quagmire of superhero swapping (trailer).

Marvel Studios is set to release its 33rd film, “The Marvels,” continuing their narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming movie features the superhero trio of Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, portrayed by Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani respectively.

In a peculiar plot twist, the characters begin to swap places each time they use their powers, necessitating a collaboration to navigate this complex situation. This unexpected development forms the crux of the film’s storyline. The narrative is rooted in Marvel’s history, connecting to past events like the “Stan Lee At Carnegie Hall” occasion of 1971.

Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, now free from the control of the Kree, faces the responsibility of a destabilized universe. Alongside Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau, Carol grapples with the emerging challenges linked to an anomalous wormhole and a Kree revolutionary. This scenario creates a team dynamic among the three characters.

Nia DaCosta directs the film, co-writing the screenplay with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. DaCosta’s appointment as the film’s director marks her as the first Black woman to direct an MCU film, signifying the franchise’s commitment to diversity.

“The Marvels” has its origins in Brie Larson’s expressed interest in a sequel featuring the character Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel. Now, several years after the 2019 release of Captain Marvel, this vision is becoming a reality, with the upcoming film introducing the character alongside the established ones of Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau.

Shot in various locations, including Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and Tropea, Italy, “The Marvels” promises to offer a range of settings. In addition to the main trio, the film features a diverse cast, including Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Samuel L. Jackson.

“The Marvels” is scheduled for release in the United States on November 10th, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
