Doom Patrol Vol. 3: Down Paradise Way by Grant Morrison, Richard Case, Kelley Jones, Mark McKenna, John Nyberg and Kim Demulder (graphic novel review)
If you wondered when Danny the Street appeared, then look no further than ‘Doom Patrol Vol. 3: Down Paradise Way’, reprinting Doom Patrol # 35-46 from 1992. Surely the most unique and enigmatic character who just loves to party. Well, except when he has problems with the people from N.O.W.H.E.R.E.. This volume also introduces 1950s strong man, Flex Mentallo.
Elsewhere, actually the old JLA base, Rhea Jones has had a metamorphosis, amplifying her magnetic powers and attracting anything metallic. Well, nearly all as Cliff Steele’s robot body seems immune. She and the Doom Patrol are drawn off-planet to their first alien planet, although they appear to be observers to the action than actually taking part.
I should point out these issues rush by as you read them and essentially only two extended stories. They do fulfil writer Grant Morrison’s desire to write peculiar stories but, even when I read them originally, I did wonder how long he could keep this up or how many peculiar villains or groups he could come up with. Objectively, there is too much of a good thing that could burn out creative teams. As there are three more graphic novels containing these stores, a long way to go yet. He’s building things up and providing its own history. Don’t trip up.
