At long last, the sun is setting, and the most anticipated comedy-horror event of the year is rising from its slumber: the fifth season of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ is upon us. It’s time to return to Staten Island, where our beloved gang of ancient bloodsuckers, a perpetually put-upon familiar, and an energy vampire unlike any other, attempt to navigate the absurdities of modern life.
This mockumentary-style show has made us feel alive (or undead?) since its inception in 2019, bringing un-life to the hilarious idea of vampires cohabitating in a suburban house in Staten Island. A bizarre blend of ‘The Office’ and ‘Dracula,’ ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ has been one of the most unexpected comedic gems in recent years. It’s been critically acclaimed, particularly for its cast and writing, and has snagged 17 Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2020 and 2022. That’s right, folks – even the Academy can’t resist these fanged funny people.
Our immortal (and occasionally immoral) housemates have delivered four seasons of laughter, shocks, and, of course, the incessant bickering that makes this vampire household feel hilariously relatable. These vampires have taught us that even eternal life is filled with mundane challenges, like dealing with roommates, paying the bills, and keeping your nightclub in vogue (pro tip: child novelty acts always win). They’ve even managed to create a different kind of horror: the horror of modern bureaucracy. Seriously, who would have thought that wraiths forming a labor union could be the biggest problem in a house full of vampires?
The exciting news is that not only has the show been renewed for a fifth season, but there’s also a sixth one already confirmed. Looks like we’re in for a lot more laughs, scares, and immortal misadventures. The prospect of what’s in store for the vampiric roommates in the upcoming season has us waiting with bated breath (and sharpened stakes).
Will Guillermo finally get to live his dream of becoming a vampire? Will the newly transformed Marwa-Freddie couple and the original Freddie form a love triangle? Will Laszlo and Guillermo find a way to handle the rebellious and full-grown Baby Colin? And can they avoid Simon the Devious and his hat-thieving antics?
Well, there’s only one way to find out, folks! So grab your garlic (or perhaps put it aside if you’re rooting for our vampire protagonists), get comfortable on your couch, and prepare to dive into a world where the supernatural meets the hilariously ordinary.
